Bruno Fernandes has been named Premier League Player of the Season after a fantastic campaign with Manchester United.

The Portuguese has equalled the record for the most assists in a single season, levelling Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne's 20.

He becomes the first United player since Nemanja Vidic to win the award, having already secured the Football Writers' Association Footballer of the Year award.

The United skipper helped his side secure Champions League football, with the Red Devils confirmed to finish third in the Premier League.

He secured his 20th assist in United's 3-2 win against Nottingham Forest, setting up Bryan Mbeumo for the Red Devils' third goal of the game.

The 31-year-old has the opportunity tomorrow to break the record, should he assist in United's trip down to the south coast against Brighton and Hove Albion.

The Seagulls have a lot riding on the game, needing a victory to guarantee Europa League qualification next season.

Any other result leaves Fabian Hurzeler's side in jeopardy, with Chelsea, Brentford and Sunderland all capable of leapfrogging the Seagulls.

Upon levelling the assist record, Fernandes said: "I'm very happy for the assist and for the win, and to finish the season on a high.

"I got to 20, let's see - we have one more game! It's the highest I've done in the Premier League, so I am very happy with it."

Overall, the Portuguese has created 132 chances this season, the most in the league and 43 more than second-best Liverpool's Dominik Szoboszlai.

His Player of the Month in March equalled the record of six awards held by his former United teammate Cristiano Ronaldo.

Part of his success has seen United boss Michael Carrick be confirmed to continue as the club's head coach.

The former United midfielder, who was appointed in January on a temporary basis, will stay on with a two-year contract.

Carrick took over the Red Devils with the club in seventh place, leading them to a top-three finish and Champions League football.

In a statement, Carrick said: "From the moment that I arrived here 20 years ago, I felt the magic of Manchester United.

"Carrying the responsibility of leading our special football club fills me with immense pride.

"Throughout the past five months, this group of players have shown they can reach the standards of resilience, togetherness and determination that we demand here.

"Now it's time to move forward together again, with ambition and a clear sense of purpose.

"Manchester United and our incredible supporters deserve to be challenging for the biggest honours again."
