Three women who were found dead in the sea have been identified by Sussex Police as "aged 20 to 30 years old".

The force added that investigators have a "number of hypotheses" about how the three died.

The womens' bodies were recovered off the coat of Brighton beach yesterday.

Emergency services responded to reports of concern for a person in the water at around 5.45am on Wednesday morning.

Officers swarmed Black Rock car park, which is just off Madeira Drive, close to the beach, and were assisted by a helicopter and two lifeboats.

Coastguards were deployed to the water, accompanied by a large police presence on the shore.

Following an investigation into the incident, Sussex Police confirmed they believe to have identified all three women.

Next of kin of all three have been informed and formal identification procedures are now underway.

Police said it would "not be appropriate" to name the women publicly before the processes are completed.

The victims' loved ones are currently being supported by specialist officers after the shock tragedy, the force added.

Chief Superintendent Adam Hays said: "This is an utterly heartbreaking tragedy, and my thoughts are with the loved ones of these three young women after their devastating loss.

"They will remain at the forefront of our minds as we search for the answers their families, and the wider public, desperately seek.

"This is a sensitive investigation that includes a number of hypotheses, and it would not be appropriate to speculate as we to continue to gather evidence.

"I would once again ask for the public’s patience while we establish the full facts, which will be shared publicly as soon as we are able.

"Anyone with information that could help is asked to contact police online or via 101, quoting Operation Ledmore."
