Police arrest woman on suspicion of child neglect after baby dies in Manchester home

Police have arrested a 25-year-old woman on suspicion of child neglect following the death of a baby girl.

Officers responded to reports of a concern for welfare on Platt Lane in Fallowfield yesterday morning.

Despite the best efforts of emergency services, the baby tragically died in hospital.

The woman is now in police custody.

Cordons remain in place on Platt Lane while investigations are carried out by officers.

Detective Chief Inspector Ian Wrench, of City of Manchester District, said: “This is a devastating incident and news of a police investigation will cause shock in the local community.

“Please be assured that we are keeping an open mind as we pursue several lines of enquiry, working closely with our partners to understand the full circumstances surrounding how this death occurred.

“We are doing everything possible to provide answers for this baby and their family.
