Petrol and diesel drivers left in limbo amid fuel shortage fears and soaring prices

Petrol and diesel drivers continue to face sky-high fuel prices at forecourts, following concerns that some filling stations could face shortages.

Fresh data from RAC Fuel Watch shows that drivers are paying an average of more than 150p for petrol and 177p for diesel amid the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

Simon Williams, head of policy at the RAC, described it as an "unwelcome milestone", noting that petrol prices have not been this high since mid-May two years ago.

Drivers are being warned that prices will continue to rise over the coming days and weeks, with fears that diesel could cost £1.82 a litre by Easter.

Fears have also been heightened after Allan Leighton, executive chairman of Asda, warned that higher fuel demand had led to local "spikes".

He suggested that "the odd pump" was affected at some petrol stations around the UK, although there are no fears around supplies at Asda forecourts.

An Asda spokesperson said all forecourts around the UK are receiving their normal fuel deliveries and are operating as usual.

"From time to time, an individual pump may be briefly unavailable while it is being refilled, but customers will continue to have access to fuel across our estate," the spokesperson added.

A spokesperson for Fuels Industry UK said: "Companies are monitoring the fuel supply situation closely and reporting regularly into the energy department on the status now and for the weeks ahead.

"Supply remains stable in the UK and our members are working hard to ensure that remains the case."

A Treasury source said: "We took action precisely to prevent companies exploiting this crisis - and if they do, we will clamp down on it – because Labour is on the side of working people."
