Microsoft is shaking up how it manages MILLIONS of old printers — will yours keep working?

Microsoft has decided to shake up how it distributes vital driver updates for older printers connected to Windows 11 hardware. Traditionally, new software was shared via Windows Update, like other important operating system updates to Windows 11. But that's about to change.

Starting last month, Microsoft ceased pushing V3 and V4 printer drivers via Windows Update, impacting printers up to 12 years old. As Windows Latest reports, Microsoft noted that: "Starting in January 2026, Windows will no longer support V3 and V4 printer drivers. These older driver models were announced as deprecated in September 2023. Most customers use newer printer drivers or modern printing solutions, which continue to work and are recommended. If your printer depends on a V3 or V4 driver, it may stop installing or working after support ends."

While some panicked Windows 11 users mistakenly believed Microsoft was culling support for these older printers – like it did with the retirement of Windows 10 at the end of last year, leaving the popular operating system without new features, driver updates, or patches for security flaws – that's not actually the case.

Your older printer will continue to function and get all the necessary updates, but there's now a different process.

Your existing drivers remain completely functional, and all the features you're used to will keep working as normal. However, now if you need a fresh driver or want to stay current with updates, you'll simply head to your printer manufacturer's website and download them directly.

Microsoft has confirmed that vendor-supplied drivers can still be installed through separate installation packages. It's worth noting that most modern printers don't use these older V3 and V4 drivers. Many of the printers that have them installed are likely over a decade old.

This update has been a long time coming, too.

Microsoft first announced this update back in September 2023, giving everyone more than two years to prepare.

If printer manufacturers want to offer more advanced features beyond the basic Windows setup, they can use something called Print Support Apps , which are available through the Microsoft Store.

This means instead of installing bulky driver packages or separate software from a website, you’ll download a lightweight app — just like any other app on your PC. This app can unlock extra features such as advanced print settings, scanning tools, and ink management without requiring traditional installer files.

Looking ahead, there are a couple more dates to keep in your diary.

After July 2026, Windows will automatically prioritise its built-in printer drivers (IPP inbox class drivers) instead of drivers provided by printer manufacturers when you install or set up a printer. This could mean setup will be faster and simpler, with fewer compatibility issues, and improved security updates from Microsoft. However, it also could mean you may lose access to some advanced printer features, such as booklet printing or custom tray settings.

Then, from July 2027, manufacturers will no longer be able to submit driver updates to Windows. However, Microsoft will continue to provide critical security updates for existing drivers through Windows Update, helping ensure your older printers remain secure.
