An alert system for a vehicle has a computerized monitoring apparatus, a plurality of sensors sensing environmental conditions, status of apparatus of the vehicle, and presence or absence of a cellular telephone, and reports said conditions, status and presence or absence to the monitoring apparatus as variable values, and wireless transmission circuitry enabled to send an alert to the cellular telephone. The monitoring apparatus transmits an alert if the following sequence of events is determined: (1) at a first point in time the cellular telephone is in the vehicle and the ignition is on (2) at a second point in time after the first point in time the ignition is switched off (3) at a third point in time after the second point in time the cellular telephone is no longer in the vehicle and it is determined there is a human or other animal in the vehicle.
