The route circuit is structured to estimate a number of charging locations for an energy storage system of a vehicle for a planned route. The stop-start circuit is structured to determine a stop-start strategy for an engine of the vehicle based on the estimated number of charging locations and expected charges to be received by the energy storage system. The stop-start strategy defines a frequency and duration of using the engine in an on-mode during operation of the vehicle along the planned route. The stop-start circuit is further structured to determine that the energy storage system fails to receive an expected charge at one of the charging locations, and update the stop-start strategy to compensate for failing to receive the expected charge by increasing use of the engine in the on-mode during operation of the vehicle along the planned route.",
