The at least one intake valve for an intake event can be opened for introducing a charge into the combustion chamber (26) for the duration of a crankshaft angle rotation. In the method, gas is blown directly into the at least one combustion chamber (26) of the internal combustion engine (12) after the at least one exhaust valve is closed and before the charge located in the combustion chamber (26) is compressed with the blown-in gas. The at least one intake valve is opened before closing of the at least one exhaust valve for the intake event.
