The invention relates to an internal combustion engine having at least one exhaust valve per cylinder that can be actuated by a camshaft and a transmission device, wherein a hydraulic valve clearance compensation element is arranged in the transmission device between the camshaft and the exhaust valve, and having an engine braking device comprising an engine exhaust brake for building up exhaust gas back-pressure and a decompression brake, by means of which at least one exhaust valve can be held open at least in an engine braking phase, wherein the decompression brake is formed by the hydraulic valve clearance compensation element. The internal combustion engine comprises a speed limitation device (10) which is designed to deactivate fuel injection above a predetermined fuel cutoff speed. The transmission device (3, 4, 5), the engine exhaust brake and the hydraulic valve clearance compensation element (6) are designed such that a limit speed (n2), from which a gap occurs between the exhaust valve (1) and the associated valve seat ring in the engine braking mode during the cam base circle phase, lies at a distance value (Δn) above the fuel cutoff speed (n1).
