The downstream exhaust gas sensor (56; 86) is mounted on an exhaust pipe (44; 74) extending outwardly from an expansion chamber (E2, E3; F1) in the silencer (50; 80). The exhaust gas sensor can easily be mounted on the exhaust pipe downstream of the catalyst without machining a case of the silencer.",
