A method for performing a communication between a first vehicle and a second vehicle comprises: generating a first pattern within a lighting unit of the first vehicle, wherein the first pattern represents information about at least one of the first vehicle and a current traffic situation; detecting the first pattern within the second vehicle; and evaluating the detected first pattern to retrieve the information. The method is characterized in that the lighting unit comprises a plurality of individual light sources, the first pattern is generated by changing a measurable characteristic of a subset of the individual light sources, and the first pattern comprises at least one of an icon, a numeral pattern and a textual pattern.
