The invention relates to methods for adapting a detected camshaft position (NW) of a camshaft (7; 14) in an internal combustion engine (1) with: detecting an actual gas signal (S) in a gas space (2; 12) assigned to the camshaft (7; 14), which is assigned to a detected camshaft position (NW), processing the gas signal (S) into an actual gas criterion (K), modeling multiple simulated gas criteria (K), each assigned to a target camshaft position (NW), comparing the simulated gas criteria (K) with the actual gas criterion (K), determining a simulated gas criterion (K) with the smallest deviation from the actual gas criterion (K), determining an actual camshaft position (NW) that corresponds to the simulated gas criterion (K) with the smallest deviation from the actual gas criterion (K), determining a camshaft position correction value (NW) from the difference between the determined actual camshaft position (NW) and the detected camshaft position (NW), determining corrected camshaft positions (NW) by correcting the detected camshaft positions (NW) by the camshaft position correction value (NW). The invention further relates to an engine control unit (19), an internal combustion engine (1), and a vehicle (100) for carrying out the method.
