In the method, a speed error characteristic value (e) and an acceleration error characteristic value (e) are provided. Depending on the speed error characteristic value (e), a speed error factor (f1) is determined, by which the speed error characteristic value (e) is mapped onto a value range [0; 1]. Depending on a multiplication of the speed error factor (f1) with the acceleration error characteristic value (e), a correction characteristic value (K) is determined. A sum consisting of the correction characteristic value (K) and the speed error characteristic value (e) is supplied to an I-controller (I), the speed error characteristic value (e) is supplied to a P-controller (P), and a sum consisting of a characteristic value present at the output of the I-controller (I) and a characteristic value present at the output of the P-controller (P) is output as a control variable (u) for speed control of the rail vehicle (10).
