The axle includes two inverter devices coupled to respective electric motors to drive the respective drive wheels. Each inverter device includes a respective electronic control unit. The two electronic control units exchange messages via the vehicle communication network. The first electronic control unit detects malfunctioning in the respective inverter device and/or in the respective electric motor. If a malfunctioning is detected, the first electronic control unit switches from a normal operating state to a safe operating state and transmits a safe-state request message via the vehicle communication network. The second electronic control unit receives the safe-state request message and, in response to the safe-state request message being received, switches from the normal operating state to the safe operating state.",
