SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR CONTROLLING A POWERTRAIN OF A VEHICLE

The invention concerns a powertrain system (10), comprising:- an engine (11) connectable to a wheel,- a clutch (20),- a geartrain (30) configured to be coupled to a power output shaft (12) of the engine by the clutch, comprising a gearbox output shaft (31) configured to be drivingly connected to the wheel and receive torque from the engine,- a control unit (40) configured to selectively operate the engine, the clutch, the geartrain in a freewheeling mode, in which the power output shaft is nonrotating and the engine is disconnected from the wheel,and further configured to:- in the freewheeling mode, obtain real-time data (50) indicative of a hard braking event from a service brake (13),- based on the obtained real-time data, send an engaging command (52) to the clutch,- control the clutch to a target torque transfer position (53).
