The invention relates to an inverter (3) for an electrical machine (2), which has an intermediate circuit (4) available via a first electrical pole (6) and a second electrical pole (7) and has multiple phase systems (11,12,13), each of which comprises a high side switching device (14,18,22) and a low side switching device (16,20,24), wherein the high side switching device (14,18,22) is connected on the one hand to the first pole (6) and on the other hand to the low side switching device (16,20,24) and the low side switching device (16,20,24) is connected on the one hand to the high side switching device (14,18,22) and on the other hand to the second pole (7), wherein the high side switching device (14,18,22) and the low side switching device (16,20,24) each comprise a power switch (15,17,19,21,23,25) with a control input (28), a power input (29) and a power output (30), and wherein the power input (29) and the power output (30) are electrically connected to each other when the power switch (15,17,19,21,23,25) is closed and are electrically isolated when the power switch (15,17,19,21,23,25) is open. It is provided that the control input (28) of the power switch (15,17,19,21,23,25) of the high side switching device (14,18,22) and/or the low side switching device (16,20,24) is connected both to a control circuit (31) and to an intermediate circuit voltage limiting circuit (32), which closes the power switch (15,17,19,21,23,25) when an intermediate circuit voltage in the intermediate circuit (4) exceeds a voltage threshold value. The invention further relates to an electrical drive device for a motor vehicle as well as a method for operating an inverter (3) for an electrical machine (2).
