A battery management device according to an embodiment of this document includes a conversion circuit configured to switch an electrical connection between a first battery pack and a second battery pack, and one or more processors configured to determine, based on an operation mode of a battery system including the first battery pack and the second battery pack, a connection mode including a multi-connection mode or a single connection mode between the first battery pack and the second battery pack and a load connected to the battery system and manage an operation of the battery system by controlling the conversion circuit based on the connection mode.
