The disclosure relates to an impact safety system for a vehicle (1) and a method for adapting an impact safety system (10) as a function of a sensor (3). The impact safety system comprises a body element (5, 25) and a body element support arrangement (15, 20, 30) adapted to rigidly support the body element (5, 25). A connection element is arranged in working cooperation with the body element support arrangement (15, 25, 30) and is configured to have a controllable stiffness. By having a controllable stiffness, the behaviour of the impact safety system can be controlled and adapted to a specific traffic environment, or situation which relates to the ambient environment of the vehicle.
