The electromechanical strut comprises a drive unit (12) having a motor (32), a lead screw (36), a planetary gear set (34) that operably connects the motor to the lead screw, and an electromechanical brake assembly (38). The electromechanical strut further comprises a telescoping unit (16) with an extendable tube (18) and a drive nut (62) for converting rotational movement of the lead screw into linear movement of the telescoping unit. The electromechanical brake assembly is selectively movable between an engaged state in which the lead screw is prevented from rotating in order to prevent axial relative movement between the drive unit and the telescoping unit, and a disengaged state in which the lead screw is permitted to rotate in order to enable axial relative movement between the drive unit and the telescoping unit.",
