A control apparatus for an internal combustion engine (10) is configured to open a waste gate valve (48) when switching from supercharged lean burn operation to stoichiometric burn operation when it is necessary to decrease an air amount (Gair); control an exhaust variable valve train (30) so that, during a response delay period (Ä D ') accompanying the waste gate valve (48) being opened, a valve opening period (EX1) and a valve opening period (EX2) are set, the valve opening period (EX2) overlapping with a valve opening period (IN); control a fuel injection valve (20) so as to inject fuel of an amount necessary to realize the stoichiometric air-fuel ratio under a stoichiometric requested air amount (Gair_req) and control the valve opening period (operating angle) (EX2) of the exhaust valve (28) during the response delay period (Ä D '), so that the air amount (Gair) comes at least close to as requested (Gair_req).
