A cartridge (104) coupled or coupleable with a control body (102) that is equipped with a control component (208), the control body (102) being coupled or coupleable with the cartridge (104) to form an aerosol delivery device (100), the cartridge (104) comprising: a housing (216) defining a reservoir (218) configured to retain aerosol precursor composition, a heating element (222) configured to operate in an active mode in which the cartridge (104) is coupled with the control body (102), the heating element (222) in the active mode being controllable by the control component (208) to activate and vaporize components of the aerosol precursor composition, and a proximity sensor (252; 400) configured to detect a level of the aerosol precursor composition in the reservoir (218) without requiring any physical contact with the aerosol precursor composition, the proximity sensor (252; 400) or control component (208) being configured to control operation of at least one functional element of the aerosol delivery device (100) in response to the level of the aerosol precursor composition so detected.
