For determining a position of a portable device (30) relative to a vehicle (10), the following steps are performed: Generating a magnetic field by means of the vehicle (10). Detecting the magnetic field by means of a magnetic field sensor (1) of the portable device (30). Evaluating the magnetic field in order thereby to determine the position of the portable device (30) relative to the vehicle (10).
