The invention relates to a method for operating a drive device which has an exhaust gas probe arranged in an exhaust tract, wherein the exhaust gas probe is heated at least temporarily by means of a probe heater and a probe temperature (T) of the exhaust gas probe is measured. It is provided that during heating a temperature increase value corresponding to the temperature increase of the exhaust gas probe is determined and upon deviation of the temperature increase value from a setpoint value a defect of the probe heater is detected. The invention further relates to a drive device.
