The invention relates principally to a starter pinion and pinion carrier assembly comprising a pinion carrier (26) including a connecting section (34), a drive pinion (21) mounted around said connecting section (34) of said pinion carrier (26), and an elastic device (37) mounted between said pinion carrier (26) and said drive pinion (21), said elastic device (37) being adapted to attenuate vibrations of said drive pinion (21) on said pinion carrier (26). Thus, by attenuating vibrations at the level of the drive pinion, the invention makes it possible to prevent propagation of vibrations throughout the entire motion transmission chain of the starter, which preserves it from premature wear. This also makes it possible to have good centering of the pinion on the rotor shaft.
