To improve a compensating container for a hydraulic actuation system, in particular for a hydraulic brake system or a clutch system, comprising a housing, in whose interior space a storage space intended for the storage of hydraulic medium is bounded by a separating element which changes its shape in accordance with a volume of the storage space, it is proposed that the housing protectively encompasses the separating element in all its forms, which correspond to possible volumes of the storage space, that a fill-level-indicating area of the separating element changes its position in the housing upon a change in the volume occupied by the hydraulic medium stored in the storage space, and that this position in each case represents a fill-level-indicating position, and that the fill-level-indicating position lying within the housing is visible from outside the housing through a viewing area of the housing.
