Heat pump with Hot Gas Bypass for Automotive Heat Pump Application

DRIVE June 18, 2026
Source
A heat pump system includes a refrigerant circuit having a primary loop including a compressor, a condenser, an expansion element, and a chiller, wherein a bypass flow path extends from a branch point disposed along the primary loop downstream of the compressor and upstream of the condenser to one of a pre-chiller reentry point disposed along the primary loop downstream of the expansion element and upstream of the chiller or a post-chiller reentry point disposed along the primary loop downstream of the chiller and upstream of a suction inlet of the compressor. A bypass valve is disposed along the bypass flow path and is configured to meter a flow of gaseous refrigerant flowing along the bypass flow path to the corresponding one of the pre-chiller reentry point or the post-chiller reentry point to increase a pressure and temperature of the refrigerant along the primary loop.
