According to an exemplary embodiment, the negative electrode active material for nonaqueous electrolyte secondary batteries is a composite particle comprising: an alkali aluminate phase containing two or more alkali metal elements and Al; a silicon phase that is dispersed in the alkali aluminate phase; and a conductive layer that is formed on the surface of a base particle comprising the alkali aluminate phase and the silicon phase.
