The invention relates to a method for operating a gas engine (3), in particular a stationary one, wherein an exhaust gas line (29) adjoining the gas engine (3) is provided, through which the exhaust gas (30) of the gas engine (3) flows, wherein the gas engine (3) is operated with a lean fuel gas-air gas mixture (6), wherein the gas engine (3) is operated according to a Miller cycle, preferably such that the closing point of at least one intake valve of the gas engine (3) lies in a crank angle range of approximately 50° crank angle before BDC (bottom dead center) to approximately 10° crank angle before BDC. According to the invention, the exhaust gas line (29) has at least one SCR catalyst element (31), by means of which nitrogen oxides (NOx) of the exhaust gas (30) flowing through the SCR catalyst element (31) are reduced with hydrocarbon (C y H z ) as reducing agent, wherein at least a portion of the hydrocarbon (C y H z ) flowing through the SCR catalyst element (31) is a component of the exhaust gas (30) of the gas engine (3).
