A toll collection method and a toll system are provided in which a vehicle device (10) is equipped with an optical detection device (14) that is designed to capture at least one image of a roadside first arrangement of machine-readable characters (41, 41a, 41b, 41c) and thereby optically detect a first self-positioning information provided by the roadside first arrangement of machine-readable characters (41, 41a, 41b, 41c), and in which a toll fee for the use of that road section (40) is determined from one or more detected first self-positioning information, whose traversal is implied by the detection of the first self-positioning information.
