Cleaning of the valve element 6V is delayed following a key-off of an engine 2 allowing any deposits 18 formed on the valve element 6V to cool to a lower temperature. The length of the delay is chosen such that any deposits 18 on the valve element 6V are still relatively soft and hence easy to remove but are unlikely to reform after the cleaning operation has taken place due to the lower temperature of the valve element 6V.",
