Source
Provided is an engine starting device that makes it possible to restart the engine without any loss of engine startability while preventing an excessive load current from flowing into a starter motor. The engine starting device includes a pinion (13) that meshes with a ring gear (20) connected to the engine, a solenoid switch (11) that moves the pinion in the direction of the ring gear using current supplied by a battery (50), a starter motor (14) that rotates the pinion using the current, and a starter control unit (110) that, on the basis of a signal from a control device (70) which gives instructions for starting the engine, supplies the necessary current to the starter motor and the solenoid switch. The starter control unit is provided with a starter motor load determination unit that determines the load status of the starter motor based on the starter motor terminal voltage, when the starter motor is rotated via the signal.
