  "textContent": "The invention relates to a method for controlling engine brake operation on internal combustion engines (1) for motor vehicles, wherein the internal combustion engine (1) is operated with direct fuel injection and a controllable brake flap (6) for backing up exhaust gases during engine brake operation is provided in the exhaust system, and furthermore with an exhaust gas recirculation device with an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve (13) arranged upstream of the brake flap and a return line (12) which connects the exhaust system to the intake system of the internal combustion engine (1) and controls a defined exhaust gas recirculation quantity to the combustion air during driving operation, wherein during engine brake operation (MB) the EGR valve (13) is opened as a function of at least one predetermined operating parameter (n, T E ) of the internal combustion engine (1), in particular such that the opening degree or the degree of opening of the EGR valve (13) is predetermined as a function of the currently detected and/or determined value of the at least one operating parameter (n, T E ) during engine brake operation. According to the invention, through a combination of several predetermined and/or defined operating parameters of the internal combustion engine (1), the opening of the EGR valve (13) is controlled such that a defined rotational speed (n) of the internal combustion engine (1) is maintained during engine brake operation.",
