A system and method include generating, by a map labeling control unit (104) including a processor, label candidates (218) for areas of an airport map (102), evaluating, by the map labeling control unit (104), the label candidates (218) to determine positions of labels (155, 362) for the areas of the airport map (102), and determining, by the map labeling control unit (104), different sets of labels (155, 362) to display for different views of the airport map (102).
