AIR STARTER WITH BEARING COOLING
DRIVE
March 19, 2025
An air starter (10) for starting a turbine engine (14) includes a housing (30), a turbine (54), an output shaft (60), and at least one bearing (70). The housing (30) defines an interior (28) where the turbine (54) couples to the output shaft (60). A primary air flow path (36) extends through the housing (30) where air from the turbine (54) can be exhausted through a primary outlet (34) or a cooling outlet (90). A cooling passage (82) adjacent the at least one bearing has a cooling inlet (80) and a cooling outlet (90), to define cooling air flow path (92) from the cooling inlet to the cooling outlet, with the cooling inlet fluidly coupled to the primary air flow path whereby a portion of air in the primary air flow path passes through the cooling passage and cools the least one bearing.
