A gas bag system (10) of a vehicle occupant protection system has a housing (20) consisting of a first fabric element (22) and a second fabric element (24), wherein the second fabric element (24) forms an enclosure for holding the gas bag (16) and the inflator (18). The first fabric element (22) is permanently connected to the second fabric element (24) at two opposite connection sections (32), and at least a central area (40) of the first fabric element (22) is embedded in or overmolded with a plastic material of an interior panel (12) to permanently fix the first fabric element (22) to the interior panel.
