Methods of improving performance of an exhaust aftertreatment system EAS 104 in heavy duty vehicles 100 may use a control techniques to increase engine exhaust temperatures T5 in a fuel efficient manner. The exhaust temperatures may be increased by using the electrical generator 108 driven by the engine 102 and to add the electrical energy QE generated as input energy to the exhaust gas during operation state of idling of the engine, while at least on cylinder is firing and at least one cylinder is deactivated.
