SYSTEM FOR OPERATING A VARIABLE FREQUENCY INDEPENDENT SPEED MOTOR IN AN EXTENDED SPEED RANGE

A system (100) may include a variable frequency independent speed (VFIS) motor-generator (102). The system (100) may further include a first power conditioner (104) coupled to a set of stator windings (218) of the VFIS motor-generator (102) and a second power conditioner (106), distinct from the first power conditioner (104), coupled to a set of primary windings (226) of a high-frequency transformer (224), where a set of secondary windings (228) of the high-frequency transformer (224) are coupled to a set of rotor windings (222) of the VFIS motor-generator (102). A method (900) may include providing a first power signal (302) at the set of stator windings (218). The method (900) may further include generating (908) a second power signal (306) at the second power conditioner (106) for driving the set of rotor windings (222), where a shaft speed (312) of the VFIS motor-generator (102) is based on a difference (314) between a first frequency (304) of the first power signal (302) and a second frequency (308) of the second power signal (306).
