A headset for use in displaying a virtual image of a building information model (BIM) in relation to a site coordinate system of a construction site and a method for tracking a portable tool at a construction site. Both comprise deriving a transformation between a real-world coordinate system and an intrinsic coordinate system of a positional tracking system. The headset is communicatively coupled to one or more position-tracking sensors mounted thereon, has an augmented reality display system, and an electronic control system. The electronic control system is configured to convert a BIM model defined in an extrinsic, real world coordinate system into an intrinsic coordinate system defined by a position tracking system, receive headset tracking data from a headset tracking system and render a virtual image of the BIM relative to the position and orientation of the headset on the construction site which is viewable by the user as a virtual image of the BIM.
