According to one embodiment, a power conversion apparatus (10) comprises a controller (16) and a multi-level converter (12) connected to power supply lines in parallel with a load. Based on a detected harmonic component of a load current (Ir, Is, and It) flowing to the load (2), the controller (16) obtains a compensation current made to flow to each of the power supply lines (Lr, Ls, and Lt) to suppress the harmonic component, controls an output voltage (Vrm, Vsm, and Vtm) of the multi-level converter (12) to obtain the compensation current, and controls a value of the compensation current such that an effective value (Irm_rms, Ism_rms, and Itm_rms) of an input current (Irm, Ism, and Itm) from each of the power supply lines (Lr, Ls, and Lt) to the multi-level converter (12) falls within a threshold value (Im).
