A method and apparatus for detecting lithium plating in a lithium battery are provided. This application relates to the field of battery technologies, and may be applied to a new energy vehicle, an electric vehicle, an intelligent vehicle, and a connected vehicle, to improve reliability of lithium plating diagnosis. The method includes: determining, based on a state of health SOH of a lithium battery, a temperature of the lithium battery, and a correspondence between the SOH of the lithium battery and the temperature of the lithium battery and a target parameter, a target parameter corresponding to the lithium battery (S301); substituting the target parameter corresponding to the lithium battery into a preset lithium plating estimation model, to obtain a lithium plating estimation model of the lithium battery (S302); entering a charge current of the lithium battery, a voltage of the lithium battery, the temperature of the lithium battery, and the SOH of the lithium battery into the lithium plating estimation model of the lithium battery, to obtain a real-time potential value of a negative electrode of the lithium battery (S303); and determining that lithium plating occurs in the lithium battery if the real-time potential value of the negative electrode of the lithium battery is less than zero (S304).
