DIRECTION-OF-TRAVEL-BASED INHIBITION OF SPEED CONTROL BASED ON TRUCK-TO-TRUCK PROXIMITY DETECTION

A proximity-detection and speed-control system (400) for a materials-handling vehicle (200a), such as a lift truck, is provided with a recommended direction of travel (R) for the vehicle (200a). A proximity sensor (410) is provided to determine the vehicle's proximity to a restricted member, such as another vehicle (200b), a high-value object (610), a dangerous location (710), or a pedestrian (810). If the vehicle (200a) is traveling in the recommended direction of travel (R), the speed control function is disabled. If, however, the vehicle (200a) is not travelling in the recommended direction (R) and the proximity sensor (410) indicates the vehicle (200a) is within a restricted distance of the restricted member (200b, 610, 710, 810), the speed control function (440) is triggered to restrict the maximum speed of travel of the vehicle (200a) and to slow the vehicle (200a) if needed.
