A battery system includes a battery pack including a plurality of battery cells, a first main relay including one end connected to a positive electrode of the battery pack, a second main relay including one end connected to a negative electrode of the battery pack, a first link line connected to the other end of the first main relay, a second link line connected to the other end of the second main relay, and a battery management system closing the first main relay, measuring a positive electrode voltage of the battery pack and a negative link voltage of the second link line, and determining an external short circuit when a voltage difference between the positive electrode voltage of the battery pack and the negative link voltage is less than a predetermined reference voltage.
