An energy storage system comprises multiple storage modules and a control device. The control device is configured to determine operating conditions of the energy storage system for a predetermined period and, depending on the determined operating conditions of the energy storage system and depending on at least one respective internal parameter of the multiple storage modules, to select one of these storage modules. Furthermore, the control device is configured to determine, based on the determined operating conditions of the energy storage system and based on the at least one internal parameter of the selected module, whether the selected module receives energy, delivers energy, or is deactivated.
