Embodiments of the present invention provide a map data processing method and apparatus, to add, to a map, a new type of map information, namely, shadow information that describes a shadow region. Embodiments of the present invention provide a plurality of optional solutions for content indicated by the shadow information and a data organization form in the map, so that the map can record at least one of a geographical location, a shape, a size, a shadow degree, a reliability degree, a formation cause, and a change with time of the shadow region. Therefore, information richness of the map is improved, and diversified application requirements can be met. Embodiments of the present invention further provide a plurality of application solutions of the shadow information, which may be applied to a plurality of scenarios such as target recognition, assisted driving, parking space searching, navigation, car hailing, solar energy charging, and laser projection.
