The system (10) comprises a first tire sensor unit (34) being mounted on a first tire and including a first footprint length measurement sensor and electronic memory capacity to store an identification of the first tire sensor unit; a second tire sensor unit (34) being mounted on a second tire and including a second footprint length measurement sensor and electronic memory capacity to store an identification of the second tire sensor unit; a processor (40) in electronic communication with the first and second tire sensor units; a vehicle status determination module (62) in electric communication with the processor (40) for determining when the vehicle (14) is in at least one of a static state (64) and a cruising state (66); a mean calculation module (70) in electric communication with the processor (40) for determining a first mean footprint length and a second mean footprint length; a comparison module (72) in electric communication with the processor (40) for determining a longest and a shortest of the first mean footprint length and the second mean footprint length; and a position determination module (78) in electric communication with the processor (40) for generating a position determination of the first tire sensor unit and the second tire sensor unit based on the longest and the shortest of the first mean footprint length and the second mean footprint length.",
