A method for determining the wear state of a friction surface (4) of a wear element (1), wherein the wear element (1) comprises a base element (2) with a non-even surface (7) with at least one projection (6) and a protective coating (3) at least partially covering the at least one projection (6) to form the friction surface (4), wherein the method comprises the steps: - step (S1): providing a detection means (9) configured to detect at least one wear characteristic of the friction surface (4); - step (S2): establishing and/or evaluating boundary conditions for detecting the at least one wear characteristic of the friction surface (4); - step (S3): detecting the wear characteristic of the friction surface (4); and - step (S4): determining the wear state from the detected wear characteristic. [0002] Further, a friction brake and a vehicle are disclosed.
