RECHARGEABLE BATTERY WITH HIGH COMPRESSION ELECTRODE COIL AND METHODS FOR MAKING THE SAME

Electrochemical cells including an outer constraint and methods of making the same are provided. The electrochemical cells include a coil electrode defining a cylindrical core and extending circumferentially about the core. The coil electrode includes an anode, a cathode, and a separator and an electrolyte therebetween. The outer constraint extends circumferentially about the coil electrode and radially compresses the coil electrode to hold it under a radial stack pressure. Electrochemical cells including a constraint electrode and methods of making the same are provided. The electrochemical cells further include a winding core and a staked electrode. The staked electrode includes a core portion staked to the winding core and a coil portion wound spirally about the winding core. The constraint electrode includes a coil portion wound spirally about the winding core and a constraint portion. The constraint portion extends circumferentially about and radially compress the coil portions of the electrodes.
