Method for testing a stack (1) of multiple battery element layers in the form of anodes (2a), cathodes (2b) and separators (3), wherein • geometries of at least one of the large surfaces of at least the anodes (2a) and/or the cathodes (2b) are determined, • the battery element layers are stacked to form the stack (1), • subsequently for a position test of the anodes (2a) and/or the cathodes (2b) - the stack (1) is irradiated by means of X-radiation (9), wherein the X-radiation (9) is oriented perpendicular with respect to the large surfaces of the battery element layers, and by means of the detected X-radiation with respect to at least one pair of opposite sides of the stack (1), the greatest edge distance that exists between the edges of the considered type of electrodes (anodes or cathodes) of this pair is determined, - it is checked whether this greatest edge distance is smaller than a first tolerance value, wherein ∘ in the negative case the stack (1) is rated as inadmissible and ∘ in the positive case ▪ as overhang the half of the value by which the greatest edge distance is smaller than the first tolerance value is defined and ▪ it is checked whether the greatest edge distance is smaller than a value that results from the sum of the shortest dimension with respect to the determination direction of all electrodes (2) of the considered type on the one hand and the difference of a second tolerance value and half of the overhang on the other hand, wherein - in the negative case the stack (1) is rated as inadmissible and - in the positive case the stack (1) is rated as admissible.
