The battery mounting system comprises at least two battery mounting units each comprising a U-shaped top plate having a base portion and arm portions. Each of the arm portions is connected to a respective one of outer surfaces of the first and second chassis beams. The base portion horizontally extending over upper surfaces of the first and second elongate chassis beams. A battery module carrier beam extends below and transverse to the first or second elongate chassis beam and has free ends positioned outwardly at a distance from the outer surface of the first and second elongate chassis beams, Attachment brackets attaching the battery module carrier beam to the arm portions of the respective U-shaped top plate. The battery module carrier beams of two adjacent battery mounting units are spaced from each other for receiving a respective battery module.
