REAR VIEW SYSTEM

The invention relates to a rear area visibility system (50) for a vehicle with an acquisition unit (52) for capturing a viewing cone (54) for at least a portion of an area (20) located behind the vehicle, a display unit (60) for displaying the image generated by the acquisition unit (52), which displays an image (62) viewable for the driver of the vehicle, wherein the system (50) is adapted such that the image generated by the acquisition unit (52) is an image of a virtual viewing cone that is generated from the image of the captured viewing cone (54), which is modified prior to display by the display unit such that the image processing unit (58) generates a virtual image (62) with a virtual viewing cone that corresponds to that of a vehicle interior mirror with assumed unobstructed rearward visibility from the vehicle (10).
